Smoke In Peekskill School Leads To Evacuation Tuesday

School officials said a balloon got into an air vent, which caused smoke in the building at Hillcrest Elementary School.

PEEKSKILL, NY — Students at Hillcrest Elementary School in the Peekskill school district had to be evacuated briefly because of smoke in the building Tuesday.

School officials said, shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday, a balloon got into an air vent at the school.

It caused smoke to come out of the vent, according to administration officials.

Students were escorted out of the building while police and the fire department responded, officials said.

The building was cleared for re-entry by first responders, administration officials said, and students returned to their classrooms. Instruction continued as usual.
