Toddlers Learn the Magic of Giving Back

The two to five year olds at in Peekskill learned about the importance of helping those in need this season by creating a toy train, “FHNS Donation Express” and “Growing Together Tree,” for the front lobby of their school.

The kids have been bringing in toys to donate to other children in their community who are in need through the Salvation Army.

The tree and train was completed last week and already the boxes are filled with toys. Three-year-old Owen Machingo was very excited about the toy he is giving away but understood it is going to kids that don’t have as many toys as him.

“We are donating (the toys) to kids that don’t have a lot of toys,” said Owen’s classmate, four-year-old Eleanor Healy, who said that makes her feel “happy” to give the gifts.

Director Lori Micucci and Assistant Director Dawn Gianatiempo organized the gift tree and teachers Joan Mazza and Marianne Coco had the vision for the train. Each class created a car for the train and read the book “The Little Engine That Could.”

Salvation Army’s Envoy Chaka Watch is the father of one of the students and helped to coordinate the efforts with his organization.

The kids are from the Peekskill and Cortlandt area, and some are from Putnam Valley.

The school is collecting toys, as well as hats, gloves and scarves, through Dec. 23, you can drop them off by visiting them at 1821 East Main Street between 7:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. They are asking for only new items.

Also, the has been running a coat drive this week. You can still drop off donations of coats, boots, scarves and gloves today and tomorrow. Call 739-0500, Daniela Rosen, to arrange a time to drop off.
