Unopposed Cortlandt Candidates Celebrate Re-election

About 4,000 Cortlandt residents turned out to vote for incumbent supervisor and council members, running unopposed. Town Justice Daniel McCarthy, incumbent, won election against challenger Frank Priolo.

Supervisor Linda Puglisi and council members Dr. Richard Becker and Frank Farrell were re-elected to their positions last night. Justice Daniel McCarthy wins election for town judge, according to unofficial numbers from the Westchester County Board of Elections.

According to the BOE, with 37 or 39 districts reporting, Puglisi received 4,484 votes, Becker received 4,003 votes and Francis received 4,002 votes.

Puglisi has been supervisor for twenty years and is proud of her tax record, she kept this years tax increase below the two percent tax cap at only 1.5 percent, and has kept taxes below an average of one percent increase each year. She has also tripled the town’s savings.

"I feel very proud to be Cortlandt's Town Supervisor and very humbled to once again receive the support from our community," Puglisi said in a statement.  "I am grateful to everyone. This was my eleventh election for Supervisor and every one of them have been very exciting, whether I have an opponent or not. I am looking forward to this next term which begins in January 2012 and to go forward with our Team working on new ideas, plans, programs and projects to benefit our residents. There is no resting on laurels or past projects, let's go forward. That's always been my motto".    

The supervisor has been re-elected to another two-year term, for which she will earn $116,000 per year. The position is a full-time job.

Councilmember incumbents Becker and Farrell will serve four-year terms, which pay $19,750 per year. Farrell is a printer and Becker is a cardiologist at Hudson Valley Hospital Center, and has announcedto run for New York State Senator next year.

In the race for Town Court Justice, as of 1 a.m., incumbent Judge Daniel McCarthy was leading democratic challenger Frank Priolo with 3,099 votes. Priolo had 2,360 votes, according to the Westchester County Board of Elections. Town Justices earn $39,000 per year and it is a four-year position.

In the County legislator race for District 9, Democratic candidate Catherine Borgia beat Republican opponent Susan Konig by about 750 votes. Both were first time candidates for position, running to fill democrat Bill Burton's spot, which will be left vacant by his retirement this year.

Borgia was elected Ossining Town Supervisor in 2008, and served as a Village Trustee for four years prior. She has also worked as Chief of Staff for Assemblywoman Sandy Galef. Borgia has professional experience in marketing and public relations.

Borgia received a total of 4,391 votes and Konig received 3,665, with 49 and 51 county election districts reporting.
