Voters Elect Testa and Borgia as County Legislators, Districts 1 and 9

In the County Legislator race for District 1, incumbent John Testa garnered about twice as many votes as democratic challenger Michael Kane, according to the unofficial Westchester County Board of Elections results announced last night. In the District 9 race, Democrat Catherine Borgia received about 55 percent of the votes, beating her Republican opponent Susan Konig by ten percentage points. (Details at the end of this article).

District 1 covers Yorktown, Peekskill and Cortlandt, including Buchanan and District 9 Croton-on-Hudson, Cortlandt, Peekskill, Ossining, Briarcliff. A portion of Peekskill is new to District 9; it was added when the County Board of Legislators_ following the release of the 2010 census. Part of Peekskill officially becomes part of District 9 on Jan. 1, 2012.

Testa is a Peekskill High School Technology teacher and lifelong Peekskill resident. He served as Peekskill's Mayor from 2003 until 2007, when he did not run for re-election. He was elected to the County Board of Legisltors in 2009 and has served one term in that position. This will be his second two-year term in the position, which pays $49,200.

"I feel good," Testa said after the final numbers showed his win. "I appreciate the support and confidence the district has given me. I look forward to working on cutting back taxes and reducing the size of county government."

Kane is a network technical specialist at AT&T and is a shop steward for the Communications Workers of America (CWA) 1150. Kane ran unsuccessfully against Testa for mayor of Peekskill in 2003.

In the County legislator race for District 9, Democratic candidate Catherine Borgia beat Republican opponent Susan Konig by about 750 votes. Both were first time candidates for position, running to fill democrat Bill Burton's spot, which will be left vacant by his retirement this year.

Borgia was elected Ossining Town Supervisor in 2008, and served as a Village Trustee for four years prior. She has also worked as Chief of Staff for Assemblywoman Sandy Galef. Borgia has professional experience in marketing and public relations.
