Pelham Art Center Presents 'Op-Ed Art: Image In The Service Of Ideas'

From the Pelham Art Center: The Pelham Art Center is proud to present OP-ED Art: Image in the service of ideas, a group exhibition of six celebrated artists whose illustrations have achieved international acclaim and awards for their powerful interpretations of political, personal and cultural events. On view January 19 through March 25, 2017, OP-ED: Image in the service of ideas examines the graphic art appearing in newspapers and magazines that visually complements the written word, yet stands alone as a point of view, coalesced into a powerful image. Smart, often ironic, the images prod the viewer and invite examination.

Presented in the exhibit are over 50 original pen and ink drawings, prints, paintings, collages, and digital art by Doug Chayka, Brad Holland, Frances Jetter, Alex Nabaum, Eiko Ojala and Bruce Waldman. The artwork has appeared in national and international newspapers and magazines, industry trade and academic journals, and in some cases, commissioned work that was never published. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, January 19 from 6:30-8PM including a free hands-on art workshop. The exhibit is organized by two members of the Art Center’s gallery advisory committee, Elizabeth Saperstein and Nancy Warner.

About the Artists:

Doug Chayka is a freelance illustrator and educator whose work can be seen in The New York Times, The Nation, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Atlantic, and The New Yorker among others. A former Fulbright scholar at The Berlin University of the Arts, Chayka got his start at the Kansas City Star in the late 90’s. He is based in New Jersey and Berlin.

Brad Holland is one of the most prominent and influential illustrators of the 20th century. He has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and his work has appeared in nearly every major U.S. and many international publications. As one critic has noted, “As Jackson Pollock redefined plastic art, Holland has radically changed the perception of illustration.”

Since 1975, Frances Jetter’s prints on political and social subject matter have illustrated articles for publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time, The Village Voice, The Nation, and The Progressive. Her work is in the collections of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, Detroit Institute of Arts, and The New York Public Library Print Collection. She is on the Illustrator's Advisory Board of the Norman Rockwell Museum and has taught at the School of Visual Arts since 1979.

The colorful and socially conscious artwork of Alex Nabaum has appeared in TIME, Newsweek, WIRED, The New York Times, ESPN, Rolling Stone, and Wall Street Journal. He has received awards from the Society of Illustrators, Communication Arts, American Illustration and many others. He is a graduate of Utah State University, and lives and works in Utah.

Eiko Ojala is an illustrator and graphic designer based in Estonia. He has received numerous awards for his digital papercut drawings. His work appears in the Guardian, Wired, The New York Times, The New Yorker, National Geographic Traveler and the Washington Post.

Bruce Waldman is an award-winning printmaker, illustrator, and educator. His prints are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, Art Institute of Chicago, New-York Historical Society, the Library of Congress, the New York Transit Museum, and many others, and he regularly teaches monoprint workshops at the Society of Illustrators and the Museum of Modern Art. Waldman holds a BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art and an MFA from SUNY, Buffalo.
