Artist, Teacher to Discuss Work in Bhutan at Briarcliff Library

Kim McCormack, who grew up in the village, shares her experiences in Bhutan in an exhibit.

Briarcliff Manor native Kim McCormack has been fascinated with the small Kingdom of Bhutan for most of her life.

"I learned about Bhutan starting from a very young age," she shared.

McCormack, who now lives in Katonah, said her godmother met a girl from Bhutan when she was attending finishing school in Cambridge and later brought home art and pictures to share with her family.

"I was fascinating by this unique, different place that was just magical to me," said McCormack.

Tomorrow at the Briarcliff Manor Public Library from 7 to 8:30 p.m., McCormack will discuss her experiences in Bhutan, where she has since lived for a year. She has also taken several other trips to Bhutan to work in developing its special education system.

"It's a really fascinating place to work in education," she shared. "I learn so much that I can bring back to the U.S."

Locally, McCormack works through Creative Curiosity to "use art as a vehicle to teach all ages."

She has partnered with the library on a Creative Aging Grant program that involved adults ages 55 and up. McCormack said she encouraged participants to use their own journeys as inspiration to create personal books.

The work of her students, as well as her own pieces inspired by Bhutan, are now on display at the library through April 27.

The exhibit is wonderful," she said. "Everybody takes it to their own place."

Coming up, McCormack will also be teaching a class called Shadow Box Memories through the Briarcliff Manor Recreation Department. View the attached flyer for more information.
