Briarcliff Introduces Ice Skating Rink Permits

After shifting the rink to a new court, the recreation department says its ready for freezing.

Sharpen your skates Briarcliff—the highly-anticipated Law Memorial Park ice skating rink is just about ready for use.

As Patch previously reported, the village has invested in a "NiceRink" structure that is being erected at the Pleasantville Road park.

"Because of the constant rains we have had, the clay courts have been very soft and set up on the clay courts as originally planned may cause additional rehab in the Spring," Briarcliff Manor Village Manager Philip Zegarelli wrote in his December 14 update to the community. "So we shifted the ice staking rink set-up to the asphalt court only feet away: the new location will be lit at night and is fenced in."

The new location for the rink is in the same cluster of tennis courts, but farther back from Pleasantville Road.

Additionally, the season's temperatures thus far have not been conducive to freezing the few inches of water needed for the rink, Zegarelli said.

Despite these setbacks, the Recreation Department announced today that the rink "Has now been set-up" and "is ready for freezing."

Residents can purchase a season permit for the rink at $5 per person (village residents) or $10 per person (school district residents and guests).

"Purchasers will be issued a small, plastic dog-tag style permit that we ask you to wear when utilizing the rink," the department stated in its ice skating rink literature. "The last thing we want is to see a mob of non-residents descending upon the rink and hampering the enjoyment of those who the rink is intended for."

However, the rink "will generally operate unsupervised," with part-time staff members, recreation advisory committee members and volunteers "periodically" monitoring the rink.

The hours/schedule for the rink will be:

Weekdays

  • Open skating: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Hockey: 4:30 to 6 p.m.
  • Open skating or hockey (depending on need): 8:30 to 10 p.m.
