Croton-Harmon’s Herbert Wins State Excellence in Teaching Award

The fifth-grade teacher received $5,000 toward professional development from New York State.

Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School fifth-grade teacher Kira Herbert, of the Croton-Harmon School District, has earned recognition as a recipient of the Empire State Excellence in Teaching Award.

The award program was established by Governor Andrew Cuomo to honor outstanding teachers from each region of New York State.

“New York State has thousands of excellent teachers who prepare our students for the future and help them reach their full potential,” Governor Cuomo said in a statement. “This new program will recognize our most outstanding educators, while supporting their professional growth. I commend all teachers for their dedication to making a difference in the lives of students across the state.”

Herbert, along with teachers from the state’s 10 regions, were selected by a panel of education experts, including:

· Kevin Casey, executive director, School Administrators Association of NYS

· Catalina Fortino, vice president, New York State United Teachers

· Michael Mulgrew, president, United Federation of Teachers

· Robert Reidy, executive director, NYS Council of School Superintendents

· Bonnie Russell, president, NYS Parent Teacher Association

· Nancy Zimpher, chancellor, State University of New York System

Herbert received a $5,000 stipend toward supporting her professional development and will be invited to meet with university, workforce and policy leaders across the state to share her expertise and insights.
