Pleasantville Plans to Rent Out Rec Center

The Marble Avenue space will soon be available for private parties and functions.

Locals have a new venue to host kids' birthday parities and more, thanks to a resolution passed by the board of trustees Monday.

A four-person board voted to approve an hourly rate of $65/hour for use of the activity room and kitchen. In addition, there is a $200 refundable deposit. The deposit goes up to $350 if you plan to serve beer or wine at your party.

"We compared [rates] to all our competitive recreation centers that are being rented and this was the more reasonable fee," explained Trustee Mindy Berard.

The adoption came after a work session discussion two weeks ago when board members debated whether the rental would be offered as a real revenue source for the village or more as a community service.

"It seems to me that if we want to do this, it's a service rather than a revenue producer because it's not very much money at some point it's going to cause a problem," said Mayor Peter Scherer.

Recreation Superintendent Linda Bellofatto said she has received calls from people inquiring about renting the Marble Avenue space on weekends and evenings when the department doesn't have other programs taking place.

Trustee Jonathan Cunningham, who was not present for Monday's vote, said on March 5, "I think we should charge a lot, personally, or not do it....We aren't going to make any money on this and it's going to get trashed."

Berard said when the recreation center was being renovated, the board had planned to rent it out.

"We aren't substituting our own programs to rent it," she pointed out.

If you do plan to serve alcohol during a party at the center, you still must apply for a permit through the village clerk, trustees said.
