When is the First Day of Spring?

It may be hard to believe, but spring is ready to, well, spring.

Wednesday marks the vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere and the first day of Spring.

While it seems like it has been winter for quite some time in the Pleasantville-Briarcliff Manor area, Wednesday, March 20 marks the beginning of a new season.

And it looks like Mother Nature will be recognizing the change—the National Weather Service is currently predicting a "mostly sunny" day Wednesday, with a high of 42 degrees.

The equinox means more daylight, warmer temperatures and the rebirth of flora and fauna, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. The word equinox is derived from the Latin words meaning “equal night,” according to the almanac. Days and nights are approximately equal, and the sun rises and sets due east and west.

Spring also means Easter is right around the corner (March 31) and vegetable garden-planting time has almost arrived.

Spring will last three months until June 21, and summer will carry on until the autumnal equinox on Sept. 22 at 4:44 p.m, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory.
