Electric Scooter Rider Airlifted After Riverhead Crash: Police

A driver ran a red light and hit the man, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A man riding an electric scooter was airlifted after a crash in Riverhead Thursday morning, police said.

A vehicle crashed into the man, causing serious injuries, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, the incident took place at 9:54 a.m. on Route 58 at the intersection of Ostrander Avenue. Responding officers located a man lying in the roadway with multiple injuries, police said.

Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the scene; the man, identified as Jorge Pagan, 29, of Riverhead, was treated at the scene and subsequently airlifted from the area by Suffolk County Police aviation and flown to Stony Brook University Hospital due to life-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver was identified as Otari Kobiashvili, 24, of Westhampton Beach, police said.

An investigation conducted at the scene determined that Pagan had been attempting to cross Route 58 on a scooter from north to south when he was struck in one of the westbound lanes by Kobiashivili's 2018 Toyota RAV4 SUV, as Kobiashivili was heading westbound direction and passed a red signal, police said. Kobiashivili remained at the scene and was cited for running a red light, police said.

The roadway was closed until just after 12:30, p.m., while the crash was investigated.

The roadway has reopened.
