Here are the top stories in Riverhead today:
- Gunshots fired at Riverhead apartment complex. Several calls came in from residents of the River Pointe apartment complex, located on East Main Street. Police determined that shots had been fired in the western part of the complex and that a motor vehicle in the parking lot had been damaged by gunfire. Anyone with information is asked to call the Riverhead Police at 631-727-4500. All calls will be kept confidential. (Riverhead Patch)
- Riverhead group homes for people with disabilities struggle. “The problem is, we want to raise the direct care workers to $20 an hour. The state doesn’t give us the money to do that. Basically, agencies on Long Island are paying anywhere from $14.50 to maybe $16. Agencies can’t afford to pay the $20 an hour", said Charles Evdos, the executive director of the agency Rise Life Services. (Dan's Papers)
- The most "deadly road" in Suffolk County is New York State Route 25, with 17 fatal crashes from 2017 to 2019, a new study by MoneyGeek said. New York State Route 25 extends from New York City to Orient Point, and in Suffolk County, it is called Jericho Turnpike until it becomes Main Street in Smithtown, then Middle Country Road in central Suffolk. In Riverhead, the roadway becomes Main Street again before being dubbed Main Road as it extends through Southold Town to the Cross Sound Ferry terminal at Orient Point. (The Patch)
