LI Man Intentionally Slams Vehicle Into Motorcycle During Dispute: Police

The motorcyclist is in critical condition, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A motorcyclist is in critical condition after a man intentionally slammed into him with his vehicle during a dispute, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, the crash took place Friday at about 6:58 p.m. on Old Country Road, between Ostrander Avenue and Oliver Street in Riverhead.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a white Jeep traveling eastbound on Old Country Road struck a Honda motorcycle, police said. The driver of the Jeep, Tyryk Lewis, 28, of Riverhead, and his passenger, as Rita Stumpf, 39, who is without a known address, were arrested after the crash, police said.

The motorcyclist was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital by the Suffolk County Police Department's aviation unit and remains in critical condition, police said.

Further investigation by the Riverhead Police Department's detective squad determined that Lewis and the motorcyclist, Michael Mccann, 60, of Sag Harbor, had been involved in an ongoing dispute, police said.

Detectives established that Lewis intentionally drove his vehicle into the motorcycle, police said. Lewis was arrested and charged with second-degree assault, police said. Stumpf was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance after being found in possession of crack cocaine, police said.

The Riverhead Police Department's detective squad, with assistance from the New York State Police Department's crash reconstruction team, is continuing the investigation, police said.
