Pedestrian Dies After Being Hit By Driver, 84, In Wading River: Police

He died Saturday, police say.

WADING RIVER, NY — A man died after he was hit by a car in Wading River Saturday morning, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, at 6:04 a.m., a report came in about a single-car crash involving a pedestrian in the eastbound lane of Sound Avenue in the vicinity of Hulse Landing Road.

A 2024 Hyundai Santa Cruz driven by an 84-year-old man struck Douglas Sutherland,70, of Wading River, police said.

Sutherland was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center via ambulance where he was treated for numerous injuries and subsequently died, police said.

The Riverhead Police Department's detective division and the New York State Police Department's forensic investigation unit responded to assist in the investigation, police said.

No criminality is suspected in the case at this time; however, the investigation remains ongoing.
