Here are the top stories in Riverhead today:

  1. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration awarded the Riverhead Community Awareness Program (CAP), Inc, a federal five-year Mental Health Awareness Training grant. The grant will provide $125,000 per year for CAP Adult and Youth Mental Health First Aid training to individuals and organizations in Riverhead and the surrounding communities, CAP representatives said. CAP has partnered with the Family Service League, the Riverhead Central School District, the Southampton Youth Bureau, and the NY National Guard to train instructors in both youth and adult MHFA, CAP said. 2. The Riverhead Town has found a way to deal with sewer sludge, best known as “sludge cake” in a cost reducing manner. Currently the “sludge cake” is transported to a Pennsylvania landfill for disposal. If the Board bonds money for a new $10.1 million sewer district improvement project, then costs would be cut for the transportation of “sludge cake” and allow it to be used as a soil conditioner by residents and businesses. The end goal of the project is not just to reduce costs — but to eliminate those costs all together. (RiverheadLOCAL)
  3. The play, 'The Agitators,' through scenes depicting Susan B. Anthony and Fredrick Douglass' intimate conversations as both allies and enemies in the movement for women’s suffrage, examines their friendship. The Long Island debut of the play, produced by the boots on the ground theater company, which performs historical theater and is the company in residency at the Southampton Cultural Center, will be staged at the Vail-Leavitt Music Hall in Riverhead the weekends of April 8-17. 4. In an effort to bolster immunity among older Americans, "Pfizer and its coronavirus vaccine partner, BioNTech, have asked the Food and Drug Administration for emergency use authorization" for a second COVID-19 vaccine booster to increase the durability of their coronavirus vaccinations. Pfizer-BioNTech said the request for FDA authorization of a second booster is based on "real-world" data from studies in Israel, which is among a handful of countries that offer the second boosters to older people.
