Here are the top stories in Riverhead today:
- The proposed Riverhead Islamic Center will need a variance from the Riverhead Town Zoning Board of Appeals in order to move forward with reducing the size of the planned-for 1.24 acres on Harrison Avenue. (Subscription: Riverhead News Review)
- Lt. Susan Ralph, of the Southampton Police said, Kelvin F. Mayen-Vasquez, 19, of Quiogue, was arrested after an investigation into allegations showed that he had "repeated intercourse" with an 11-year-old female victim, Ralph said. Mayen is being held in the Suffolk County Jail on numerous charges. (News 12 Long Island)
- Joseph Preli, a Manorville resident, took his passion on the road with Tex-Mex delights; Turburritos Tex-Mex food truck at 2801 Montauk Highway, in Brookhaven hamlet. Preli was into smoking meat, then the pandemic hit, he was out of a job, but not ideas. Preli changed the menu from babecue to Tex-Mex and never looked back. - On Thursday, Suffolk prosecutors said, a jury convicted Dimitri Robert, 30, a Coram man, of murder for the "fatal shooting of his 17-year-old brother outside their family home." Robert may serve 25 years to life in prison for killing Devontay Robert, according to the office of Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney. Dimitri Robert is scheduled to be back in court May 24 for sentencing. (Patch)
- Greenport Harbor Brewing Co.'s North Fork Dog Dock Diving Weekend returns to Greenport this June. Teaming up with DockDogs and Harbor Pet, the event will be held June 4 and 5. Big, small and in-between dogs participate in the event. Enjoy this fun-filled weekend and have a pint while you're at it. The North Fork Dog Dock Diving Weekend at Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. (42155 Main Road, Peconic) is always a popular event and spectators should buy tickets ahead of time. Kids under 12 get in for free. To register your dog to participate, head to the DockDogs website.
