Here are the top stories in Riverhead today:

  1. What do you get when you have opposing lawyers in the same room? A new approach, at least that is what Riverhead officials announced. They came up with a new approach to closing the town’s $40 million land deal with Triple Five-affiliate Calverton Aviation & Technology (CAT). The approach allows the deal to close without the town having to first subdivide the land being sold to CAT, as its current contract of sale requires, Riverhead Local reported. “We’re ready to move forward with an IDA application where we’ll demonstrate our financial capability to move forward with the development of the project. And we look forward to moving forward and to closing the deal,” CAT’s attorney, Christopher Kent said. (RiverheadLOCAL)
  2. The price of natural gas spiked in February; gas customers face a $19.73 increase in their bills this month after a market trading anomaly led to a price increase, National Grid announced. For those who heat with fuel oil, Newsday reported last month that prices hit an 8-year high of $4.02 per gallon on Long Island, also reflecting market volatility tied to geopolitical and demand issues in a colder-than-expected winter. 3. According to Suffolk County Police, Salvador Zarate-Mozo, 46, of Bay Shore was the man who died in the single vehicle crash on Sunrise Highway east of exit 59. The accident happened in Center Moriches at 5:25 a.m., Thursday morning. Zarate-Mozo was driving a 2009 Nissan Altima eastbound on Sunrise Highway, east of exit 59, when his vehicle left the road and struck a tree on the south side of the road, police said. Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752. (Patch)
  4. A Riverhead man died early Thursday in a head-on crash in Flanders, police said.
According to Southampton Town Police, the crash took place at 6:26 a.m. on County Road 104 near Pleasure Drive. Oniel-Alcides Aguilar-Guillen, 30, was driving southbound on CR 104 when he lost control of his 2008 Toyota Tundra and crossed into the northbound lane of traffic, striking a 2018 Ford pickup truck head-on; the truck was driven by Michael Algozzino, 62, of East Quogue, police said.
