Suffolk Man Dies, Teen Injured After Car Careens Off Roadway Into Tree: Police

It is believed he lost control of the car after suffering a medical event, police said.

MASTIC BEACH, NY — A Moriches man died after he lost control of the car he was driving and it crashed into a tree in Mastic Beach Tuesday afternoon, Suffolk police said.

Brian Baker was driving a 2022 Hyundai northbound on Mastic Road, just north of Blanco Drive, when it is believed he suffered a medical event and lost control of the vehicle at 2:22 p.m., according to police. The car crossed through the southbound traffic lanes and onto a curb before striking a tree and a utility pole, police said.

Baker, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic from the Mastic Beach Ambulance Company, police said, adding that a 16-year-old girl in the car suffered minor injuries and was released at the scene into the custody of her family.
