Man Shot To Death On Mastic Reservation Tuesday Night: Police

Suffolk police are investigating whether the shooting is related to another nearby early Wednesday morning.

MASTIC, NY — A man was gunned down on the Poospatuck Indian Reservation in Mastic on Tuesday night, Suffolk police said.

Seventh Precinct officers responded to a home on Poospatuck Lane at around 9:27 p.m. after a 911 caller reported a man had been shot, police said adding, that when officers arrived, they discovered Umar Elquhir outside the home with a gunshot wound.

Elquhir, 45, of North Bellport, was taken to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Detectives are investigating why he was at the home.

A house and vehicle were shot on Coventry Avenue in Mastic at around 1 a.m., but no one was injured. It was not immediately clear if the shooter or shooters were on foot or in a car.

It is under investigation whether both shootings are related, a police spokeswoman said.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about Elquhir's death to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers, a confidential police hotline, at 1-800-220-TIPS.
