RIDGE, NY — Suffolk police released bodycam footage from the aftermath of the shooting of a 3-year-old Ridge girl showing an officer frantically carrying her into the hospital, Newsday reported.

Police say Gary Jones, a homicide suspect detectives were looking for, opened fire with a bullet striking the girl in an adjacent apartment in Ridge, police said.

Detectives had been following up on a slaying that took place in Central Islip back in June, when they discovered Jones was inside a friend’s apartment and he fired numerous shots at them, according to police.

One of the shots Jones fired went through a wall, striking Lovely Toney, who was struck in the abdomen, her father, James, told Newsday.

Bodycam footage shows the toddler in a bloodied shirt and then an officer rushing her inside Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, telling staff, “A baby’s been shot.”

Toney underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition, according to police.

She has since been taken to Cohen's Children's Hospital in Queens, police said.

“I guess by the grace of God that she's alright,” her father told Newsday.

Patch has reached out to James Toney.

After the shooting, detectives and police officers surrounded the home and called for hostage negotiators while the Emergency Services Unit went inside with a robot and found Jones dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Officers did not return fire in the initial confrontation, according to police.

The investigation is continuing, police said.

Detectives are asking anyone with information related to this incident to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392.
