- The gap that opened on Smith Point during Hurricane Sandy has narrowed over the past several years. But it's unknown when or if it will close completely. "In an interview, Stony Brook University research professor Charles Flagg of the School of Atmospheric Sciences said the flow of sand into and around the breach has reduced the depth of the channel through the waterway," according to Newsday.
