Here are the top four stories today in Shirley-Mastic:
- Suffolk detectives are looking for a person who used stolen credit cards at a gas station in Medford earlier this month. The cards were stolen from a pocketbook at a business on Peconic Avenue, and used at a BP gas station on Route 112 on Dec. 9 around 12:30 p.m. (Patch)
- Numbers of COVID-19 hospitalizations are increasing on Long Island and now Nassau and Suffolk's seven-day positivity rate is the highest in New York State at 9.32 percent. Nassau and Suffolk reported 3,973 new cases on Sunday, with a total of 24 confirmed omicron cases on Long Island. (News 12)
- Nesconset-based nonprofit Paws of War gave out holiday gift bags worth $600 each to Long Island veterans and their canines on Sunday. Paws of War helps connect veterans with canine companions. (Subscription: Newsday)
- Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone has appointed Risco Mention-Lewis as Suffolk's Acting Police Commissioner. She has been deputy commissioner since 2012 and is the first Black commissioner in the county's history. (Patch)
