William Floyd High School Business Academy Honored By Education Dept.

The academy has recently been named the 2021-2022 Department of the Year by the Business Teachers Association of New York State.

The William Floyd Business Academy has recently been named the 2021-2022 Department of the Year by the Business Teachers Association of New York State (BTANYS) and the New York State Education Department. This is the sixth time that the Business Academy has received this prestigious recognition.

“The many accomplishments your department has made in a wide range of areas are impressive,” stated Marsha Iverson, BTANYS Award Director, in a congratulatory letter to the William Floyd High School Business Academy. “Most significant is the number of students your department serves and the extensive course and program offerings available. Your FBLA chapter is another example of the stellar involvement of students and teachers.”

The Business Academy offers a rigorous, highly-relevant interdisciplinary comprehensive program of challenging courses in career and college preparation, as well as a variety of extracurricular activities such as the Future Business Leaders of America, which has been perennially successful in their competitions. Consisting of 12 teachers with an enrollment of more than 1,000 students, the department was selected for their development, impact and contribution to students in business and marketing education.

“This award is an example of how hard our department works as a whole,” said Jacqueline Giacalone, Business and Technology Department Chairperson/business teacher, William Floyd High School. “We have one of the largest business departments on Long Island and are fortunate to have support from our district that believes in our programs and sees our success rate each year.”

The WFHS Business Academy offers a variety of courses which fall into one of three pathways: Accounting, Small Business Management, and Microsoft Office Specialist. Students have the opportunity to take the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute exam for Virtual Enterprise and Accounting, which gives them a head start in developing a range of academic, business, technological and professional skills that prepare them for future success.

Coster, Superintendent of Schools, William Floyd School District. “Our students are learning a variety of valuable skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. Business Academy courses include: Accounting; College Accounting; College Business Math; Virtual Enterprise; Wall Street; Sports, Entertainment or Fashion Marketing; the Business of Music, Sports, Entertainment, Fashion Marketing; College Business Math; Virtual Enterprise; Social Media; Business Ownership and Management – College Business Math; Business Law; Virtual Enterprise; Everyday Law; Computer Applications & Advanced Computer Applications; Web Design; Video Game Design; Virtual Enterprise; Personal Finance; College & Career Prep; College Business Law; International Business; Leadership by Design; Math Applications; and Wealth Management. Many of these courses also offer the opportunity to earn college credit at local colleges and universities.
