This year’s theme for the yearbook cover competition was “Now Playing,” which represents students focusing on the here-and-now, and the different ways they are present in their senior year. The theme is also a play on pop culture, and highlights the many influences on a senior’s life from the past to the present. Alex’s cover is based on a movie set inside of a hallway, and features two students representing the graduating class of 2023. The students are walking through doors, representing the final moments of their high school journey. The cover includes a low point of view with a unique “fish eye” perspective to enhance what the viewer sees.

The medium Alex chose was an illustration board complemented by Prismacolor colored pencils. “I enjoy using colored pencils the most as the wide variety of color and control of the wax allows me to create unique blends and effects in order to create what I envision,” Alex said.

“Alex has always had a great eye for detail and perspective, and is hardworking and self-motivated,” said Theresa Bianco, Alex’s art teacher and chairperson of the Fine Arts for the William Floyd School District. “He uses his advanced drawing skills to make the viewer feel as if we are looking through an iPhone and following the William Floyd graduates down the hallway and toward the light, which is graduation itself. The logo on the bottom of the shoe represents everyone leaving their mark in our school. I am excited to see how all of these skills he has learned in his art classes propel him forward in his career.”

Alex would like to pursue a career in engineering, as he has great curiosity and passion for it, explaining that it allows him to apply his art creativity in unique ways. Alex plans on applying to the New York Institute of Technology and Binghamton University.
