Woman Caught Driving Drunk With 4 Kids In Car In Shirley: Cops

The children ranged in age from less than one year old to a 13-year-old, Suffolk police say.

SHIRLEY, NY — A woman who was caught driving drunk in Shirley with four children, one less than one year old, in her car was charged under Leandra’s Law Wednesday night, Suffolk police said.

Martha Acostamaldonado was driving a 2013 Honda Pilot on William Floyd Parkway, when she was pulled over for a traffic violation near Roeneck Court, at around 8:36 p.m. according to police. Following a sobriety test, a Safe-T Team determined she was intoxicated and arrested her, police said.

Acostamaldonado, 36, of Center Moriches, was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger 15 years old or younger under Leandra’s Law, and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Leandra’s Law is named for Leandra Rosado who was the passenger in a car driven by an alleged driver and died.

The children were released to the custody of a family member and the vehicle was impounded.

Acostamaldonado will be held overnight at the 4th Precinct and she is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday.
