Amal And George Clooney Are Living In An 'Illegal' Soho Townhouse

SOHO, NY — Celeb couple Amal and George Clooney are staying in a Soho townhouse that's been cited by the city for "illegal occupancy," according to city records.

The Clooneys are renting in a Sullivan Street townhouse, located near Prince Street, that last month was raided by city authorities while Chrissy Teigen and her husband John Legend were staying in a rental apartment there. Teigen and Legend were spotted quickly leaving the apartment on March 2 with their belongings in tow after city officials came knocking to inspect the property, the Daily News reported at the time.

After the March 2 raid, the Department of Buildings slapped the property and its owner Richard Fertig, with a number of violations, according to city records. The violations said Fertig had "illegally converted the basement apartment to transient use." The violations are scheduled to be addressed in a hearing on Thursday. The New York Post first reported on the violations found at the Sullivan Street property; neither the Clooneys nor Fertig responded to request for comment from the newspaper.

The violations are part of the city's broader crackdown on short-term rentals, like Airbnb rentals, in the city. Owners are prohibited from renting out their properties for short-term rentals unless they live on the premises.

Amal Clooney, an international human rights lawyer, is in New York City teaching a human rights law course at Columbia Law School as a visiting faculty member at the school.
