Learn about the Battle of Long Island, the largest single-day engagement of the war and a devastating defeat that nearly ended the fight for independence in 1776. Bleyer explores the harsh realities of British occupation, which transformed Long Island into a strategic military stronghold and brought years of hardship to its residents. From 1776 until the war's end in 1783, Long Island remained under British control, making it one of the last areas occupied before the British withdrawal. This compelling talk sheds light on the local impact of a global conflict and the resilience of Long Islanders during a defining chapter in American history.

Join us in celebrating the 250th Anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth with a special screening of the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, based on her most famous book. Jane Austen is one of the most beloved British authors of all time, and her six completed novels continue to delight readers today. Her work has inspired countless movies, television series, plays, musicals, clubs, festivals, and societies around the world. Pride and Prejudice, a period drama set in Britain in the early 19th century, tells the story of the unlikely romance that blossoms between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy as they overcome their initial misunderstandings and biases to find true love. Starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, the film was nominated for four Academy Awards and is lauded for its stunning cinematography.
