Carmel Police Handle Second Gun-Brandishing Resident

Police said the man wrongfully accused customers at a local deli of parking illegally in a handicapped space.

CARMEL, NY — A senior citizen is accused of menacing customers with a handgun at a local deli on Saturday morning.

It was the second time in four days that Carmel police were called to the center of Mahopac hamlet because someone was brandishing a gun.

Carmel police said they were called to the eatery on Route 6 at 8 a.m. By the time officers arrived, the man had fled.

They learned the man had wrongfully accused some customers of parking their vehicle in a handicapped parking space. Witnesses said he approached the customers aggressively and a minor altercation ensued. After the disputants had separated and appeared to be going their separate ways, the man pulled out a handgun and threatened them.

Carmel police were able to develop information on a suspect in the case. Later that afternoon, they went to his residence and were able to take him into custody without incident. They recovered a licensed Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun.

The man was identified as Ignazio Castiglia, 73.

Castiglia was charged with Menacing in the 2nd Degree (A Misdemeanor) and two counts of Reckless Endangerment in the 1st Degree (D Felony). He was arraigned in front of Carmel Town Justice Miller and released on his own recognizance pending a future court appearance.
