Troopers Write 81 Tickets During Detail on I-84 in Putnam

Similar initiatives will be in effect through the weekend, according to officials.

State police issued scores of tickets in Putnam County Monday during a detail focused on speeding drivers and those who violated the "move over" law for emergency vehicles.

Troopers conducted the operation on Interstate 84, over the course of six hours. Most of the drivers who received tickets—44, to be exact—were cited for speeding, while 18 are accused of violating the "move over" law.

"[It] requires motorists to exercise due care to avoid colliding with an authorized emergency or hazard vehicle which is parked, stopped or standing on the shoulder of a road or highway with its emergency lights activated," officials said in a statement. "Motorists must reduce speed when encountering such vehicles. On controlled access highways with multiple lanes, motorists are also required to move from the lane immediately next to the emergency vehicle, unless traffic or other hazards exist that prevent such action from being safely performed."

Cops ticketed drivers for several other traffic infractions, too: failing to wear a seatbelt, driving with an inspired inspection certificate and driving while using a cell phone.

"In an effort to reduce speed-related crashes, improve highway safety and protect those working alongside our roads, New York State Police in Troop K will continue these special traffic enforcement efforts through this weekend," State Police said.
