Fire Department Responds to Small Spill at East Setauket Gas Station

Minor spill shuts Shell station on Route 25A.

A customer filling the tank in his boat accidentally caused a small fuel spill at the Shell gas station on Wednesday evening, according to a report in The Village Times Herald.

According to the report, fire department officials estimated between 15 and 20 gallons were spilled on the ground as the man instead wedged the nozzle into the boat's rod holder. The Village Times Herald also reported the man attempted to mitigate the spill by spraying water on the ground, something the fire department advises against doing.

The Setauket Fire Department, Town of Brookhaven fire marshals, and Suffolk County police responded to the call. The fire department soaked up the fuel on the ground by using a substance resembling gravel, according to the report.
