Ferry Service To Launch This Month On Upper East Side, City Says

Upper East Siders will be able to catch the ferry at East 90th Street starting August 15.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Upper East Side residents are getting connected to the New York City Ferry this month when the service launches its new Soundview route on August 15, city officials announced Wednesday.

The new route, which takes passengers from the Soundview section of the Bronx to Wall Street, will stop at the East 90th Street ferry landing, city officials said. It's the only currently-planned route that will service the Upper East Side pier.

The four-stop Soundview route is expected to take 54 minutes from end to end. The four stops on the route are Soundview, East 90th Street, East 34th Street and Wall Street/Pier 11, city officials said. The New York City Ferry's fare is $2.75, the same cost as a subway swipe.

The city Economic Development Corporation also announced that its Lower East Side route will launch this month on August 29.

"We're excited to launch NYC Ferry service in the Bronx, the Upper East Side and the Lower East Side, which have historically been transit deserts," James Patchett, president of the EDC, said in a statement. "For the same cost of a subway ride, New Yorkers that live and work in these communities will now have a fast, affordable and convenient way to get around the city."

The opening of the East 90th Street ferry landing will give Upper East Siders more transit options along the east side of Manhattan. The new ferry line will also make connecting with the rest of the ferry system simple. With stops at both East 34th Street and Wall Street, the Soundview route features connections with every other current route, including ferrys to Governor's Island.
