Beach, BBQs and Blankets: My Best Summer Was...

In celebration of summer, we are asking local officials and residents to recall their favorite summer memories in our new feature “My Best Summer Was...”

Check out White Plains Common Councilman John Martin's recollection of his favorite summer below.

What is your favorite summer destination: My favorite summer destination is almost anywhere there is water and sand, preferably together! 

A few years ago we bought a boat, we love to get out on the water. We do tubing and just cruising around Jamaica Bay and New York Harbor. It's extra cool seeing the big ships go into the harbor and be pretty close to them. There is also no substitute for being right up next to Lady Liberty by boat. We try to do that a couple times each summer.

My best summer was... Although I am 51 now, I still remember one of my most enjoyable summers back in college when I worked at a boat club at the Jersey Shore. Long before fist pumping was in style!

I got a job there with two college buddies and we lived at the boat club all summer. We did everything, from cleaning the club, to cooking, to bartending, to (fill in the blank). We worked like madmen, but got to go sailing with members of the club, and also got to go out on the town at night when not working. I could go on and on about summer any time…

The one thing that always says summer to me is... The best time of day for me is around 6 p.m or 7 p.m. when we are on our boat and see the cruise ships leaving New York Harbor on their way to exotic destinations. That's when I know it's time to head up and start the barbecue.

This summer I'm most looking forward to... There is no substitute for sitting on the beach with an ice-cold beer and watching my kids enjoy the same place. My two youngest boys will be lifeguards on the beach this summer so they'll probably be watching me more than I watch them!
