City Cleans Up After Irene
The White Plains Department of Public Works is working to remove trees and address flooding in the city.

White Plains experienced flooding, downed trees and power outages as result of Sunday morning’s storm leaving the White Plains Department of Public Works to clean-up the mess Hurricane Irene left behind.
“We have crews working, with Con Edison to clear trees from wires, and trying to get things back to normal,” said Mayor Tom Roach.
City residents are among the 70,000 to lose power in Westchester and Putnam counties. Con Edison’s website currently lists the city as having 1,838 outages with a pending restoration time.

“I think we’ll be out there [cleaning up] until tonight or tomorrow,” said Roach. “There’s a lot of debris. They’ve gotten a lot done, but there’s a lot more to do. “

Some city roads and intersections are still closed due to flooding, and downed trees or power lines. White Plains declared a state of emergency at 9 p.m. on Saturday banning on-street parking and forcing its restaurants, bars and theatres to close. The restrictions were lifted Sunday afternoon, however, the City is asking residents and visitors to stay home while crews work to restore services, according to the City’s website where updates will be posted.
Parking is still free until 7 a.m. on Monday in the following lots:
- Lexington-Grove (Galleria Mall) Garage at 100 Main Street
- Hamilton-Main Garage at 365 Hamilton Avenue (behind City Hall)
- Chester Maple Garage at 9 Chester Avenue (behind Mamaroneck Avenue)
- Longview Garage at Corner of Longview Avenue and Maple Avenue
A hazardous weather outlook, tropical storm and flood warnings are in effect for White Plains, according to the National Weather Service. It reports that the city will experience tropical storm conditions this afternoon, with winds between 32 and 50 mph and a slight chance of showers and. Winds are currently at 47 mph. Wind will die down tonight to between 28 and 11 mph, while skies clear, according to the NWS.
