Deadline Looms For NYSP Trooper Exam
After registering to take the exam, candidates will choose a location from which they will take the computerized test.

NEW YORK — If being a state trooper is on your career goal list, you have a few more days to register for the Trooper Entrance Exam.
The New York State Police said the deadline to register for taking the exam is Sunday, April 10.
According to the law enforcement agency, the exam will be administered through April 30.

Candidates will, for the first time in state police history, be taking the exam on computer at one of the 54 testing centers in New York. Officials said there are also testing centers at 250 other locations in the United States and at 112 U.S. military facilities around the world.

Testing sites in the state include Poughkeepsie, White Plains, Brewster, Yonkers, Hempstead, Farmingdale and Patchogue. See a map here.
Once the exam application is completed, candidates will choose a date, time and nearby testing location center to take the exam.

The exam qualifications are:
- U.S. citizen.
- 20-29 years old. Maximum age may be extended one year for each year of full-time active military duty, up to a maximum of seven years.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
There are additional qualifications required at the time of appointment, police officials said. Those can be found here.
The starting salary is $59,612. After one year, it's $84,331, and after five years, it is $100,281. There are full benefits, including retirement.
No prior police or military experience is required to become a state trooper.
