An accidental stove fire displaced 14 people at the Granada Crescent apartment complex in Greenburgh Wednesday night.
Fairview firefighters responded to a call for a structure fire inside a unit at the apartment complex at about 9:30 p.m. They evacuated 12 units initially and began an aggressive interior attack, according to Deputy Fairview Fire Chief Walter Murray.
“It was a lightweight wood and the fire would’ve taken off if it had made contact,” Murray said. “We quickly went inside with two handlines as soon as we got there.”
Murray said the fire took 40 minutes to get under control, but firefighter were at the scene through early Thursday morning.
The unity where the fire originated had major fire, water and smoke damage, while five other unit sustained water and smoke damage.
A total of 14 people, including and infant and a wheelchair bound elderly resident, were displaced by the fire. All but two of the residents needed assistance from the American Red Cross for shelter.
Local Red Cross volunteers were at the scene until about 3:30 a.m.
“The majority of the residents had insurance, so we’re assisting them with their longterm needs,” said Carolyn Sherwin, an American Red Cross spokeswoman.
