1.) Assemblywoman Visits Ground Zero

Last month New York State Assemblywoman Amy Paulin toured construction progress on the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.  The museum opened to the public on Sept. 12.

Paulin is pictured near the “Survivor Tree,” rescued from the rubble after the attacks. The pear tree was brought back to health and now stands as a symbol of hope and resilience.

2.) Registration for the Golden Harvest Dance Ends Tomorrow

If you would like to reserve a box lunch, table or perform in the talent show at the Golden Harvest Dance you must register by Thursday, Sept. 22.

The event will be held on Oct. 4 at the at 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you would like to perform in the talent show, call 914. 813.6300. If you would like to order lunch or reserve a table call 914.813.6423 or 914.813.6380. The suggested contribution for lunch is $4. Click here for more information.

3.) Fall Foliage Pick-Up Info

The White Plains Department of Public Works will continue picking up curbside yard debris and leaves in biodegradable paper bags or compost containers until Oct. 8. 

From Oct. 11 to Dec. 1 brush pick-up will be suspended, and the DPW will pick up loose leaves left curbside with leaf vacuums every 10 to 14 working days. For faster leaf pick up during this time, place your leaves in a biodegradable paper bag or designated compost containerand it will be picked-up every three to give days through mid-December. Attend White Plains Hospital’s annual Scarecrow Festival on Sunday, Oct. 16 (rain or shine) at the Kids’ B.A.S.E, 307 Mamaroneck Rd. in Scarsdale.

You and your family can build, dress and accessorize a life-sized scarecrow and take it home. For $40 (for a family of five) and $15 for each additional scarecrow you get the scarecrow, shirts, pants, neckties, hats, accessories, straw and a birth certificate. You can also jazz up your scarecrow with costumes you bring from home.

The event also includes art, entertainment, crafts, bake sale, raffles and more. You must pre-register for the event and choose a session: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; noon to 1:30 p.m.; or 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Parking is free and all proceeds will benefit White Plains Hospital. 5.) White Plains School Makes ALL-State, National

Four White Plains High School students were selected from thousands of students to participate in the 2011 New York State School Music Association Conference in Rochester, in December.

The students include: Shaina Brady (Violin, String Orchestra); Lauren Gamiel (Double Bass, Symphony Orchestra); Klara Gribetz (Alto, Women’s Chorus) and Jens Sannerud (French Horn, Symphonic Band). Their teachers are Penelope Cruz, Kathryn Davis and William Eckfeld.

Eight White Plains High School students were named Semifinalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Competition, including: Matthew Africano, Aneesh Bhattacharya, Emmett Caruso, Isabelle Daly, Adam Jaffe, Jens Sannerud, Eric Smiley and Benjamin Van Doren.
