Celebrate African history and culture in White Plains Sat. June 11 at the Juneteenth Parade. According to Juneteenth.com, the holiday is the “oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United State.”

The parade can be seen from Mamaroneck Avenue to . , 2 Fisher Ct. on Sat. June 11. Parade begins as 12 p.m. Festival runs from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m.

According to The Journal News, a roof collapse at 17 Odell Ave. forced 12 families out of their homes, when the fire department shut the building down. The Red Cross was finding accommodations for the families, The Journal News said.
White Plains Hospital’s President and CEO Jon B. Schandler was one of three men to be named the 2011 Father of the Year by the Greater New York Father’s Day Council of Westchester County.
The men will receive their awards at the sixth annual Father of the Year Awards Dinner on June 16 at the Trump National Golf Club in Briarcliff Manor. Proceeds from the event will go to the American Diabetes Association.

White Plains resident Tuvana Rua, professor of management in the John F. Welch College of Business, was honored for going “above and beyond” her duties as a faculty member during Sacred Heart University’s annual commencement breakfast. Rua was selected by her students—who were asked to nominate professors who were passionate about them and the subject, and made good use of technology an alternate ways of learning.
