1.) Westchester Commemorates the 10th Anniversary of Sept. 11
The 10th Anniversary of September 11th is about a month away. Several organizations are already making plans to commemorate one of the most tragic days in our nation’s history.

Westchester County announced this week that it will hold its annual ceremony at twilight at the Kensico Dam Plaza. The event will take place at 6 p.m. so that people can attend other commemoration events earlier in the day. Stay tuned for information on plans for White Plains’ commemoration ceremonies.

The New York State Department of Education just released state test results for the English Language Arts and Mathematics Assessments. The assessments measure performance in these subject areas for students in the third to eighth grade.
According to The Journal News, about 50 percent of White Plains students passed the English exam, while 65 percent passed the math exam. Click here to check out the White Plains CitizeNetReporter’s breakdown of percentages by grade.

4.) Get Lost in White Plains Public Access
You can now watch all of your favorite White Plains Public Access shows, as well as stream the City’s channels live through the White Plains Community Media website.
You can watch shows local programming like “White Plains Week,” “Yak Yak Girls,” and “Beyond the Game,”—there is something for everyone.
You can also watch what is playing live on channels 76 (Cablevision) and 45 (Verizon), like White Plains Common Council meetings and more. According to White Plains CitizeNetReporter, the website is still being tweaked, and the official launch will take place Aug. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
5.) Public Safety Citizen’s Academy Recruiting for September
The White Plains Department of Public Safety will start up its Public Safety Citizen’s Academy this fall, and is looking for recruits to participate in their nine-week program.
Applicants must be 18-years or older to attend the free sessions, taught by police officers and firefighters. Session are on Tuesdays between Sept. 20 to Nov. 15, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Participants will get to go on a ride-a-long with an officer; take a trip to a firing range; learn about penal and criminal procedure law; as well as learn what public safety is all about. For more information click on the PDF, which includes an application.
