Patch Chat: How Do You Beat the Summer Heat?
What do you do, and where do you go to beat the summer heat?

Hot and humid weather isn’t so bad when you are in an air-conditioned room, but it could be down right dangerous if you aren’t.
Westchester County Health Department has issued a heat advisory and warns county residents to avoid strenuous activity; drink tons of fluids (non-alcoholic and non-caffeinated); and stay indoors to avoid heat stroke and dehydration.
“Heat stroke and dehydration can take you by surprise,” said Dr. Cheryl Archbald, the county’s acting commissioner of health. “The elderly, young children, and those with high blood pressure, heart disease, or lung conditions need to be especially careful to avoid heat-related illnesses.”

Symptoms of heat stroke—which can be life threatening—include hot, dry skin; shallow breathing; a rapid, weak pulse; and confusion. Seek medical attention of you exhibit these symptoms, and think you may have heat stroke or dehydration
Humid weather could also lead to unhealthy air, caused by ozone gas produced by automobile exhaust and other organic air contaminants. An unhealthy air quality can lead to respiratory problems, nose and throat irritation.

Here are some tips from Westchester County Department of Health on how to stay healthy and beat the summer heat:
- Drink fluids, regardless of how active you are and whether you are thirsty. Drink two to four glasses of cool fluids every hour if you plan on being active or must exercise. Keep your pets hydrated too.
- Avoid drinks that contain caffeine, alcohol or a lot of sugar. They cause you to lose more body fluid. Make sure your liquids aren’t too cold, as it could cause stomach cramps.
- Stay inside, preferably in an air-conditioned setting. Bring your pets inside too. If that isn’t an option for you make sure you spend a few hours ator shopping malls, the or your closest local grocery or other stores. Staying in the air-conditioning for a few hours helps your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat.
- Take a cool shower or head over to or Pools, which are open daily until Aug. 28 from noon until 6:30 p.m. Gardella’s pool is open until 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays and Kittrell is open until the same time on Wednesdays. All you need is a White Plains Recreation Card I.D. to enter. Call 914.422.1336 for more information
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose clothing—along with tons of sunscreen (SPF15 or higher) and a hat.
- Never leave anyone or animal in a closed, parked car. Neighbors should check on elderly or sick residents and family member to make sure they are safe.
