Tar Fire at Wedgewood Apartments, Container Fire on I-287 in White Plains
The White Plains Fire Department extinguished the flames in the parking lot of 499 N. Broadway, as well a container fire on Interstate 287.
Wedgewood Apartment’s superintendent was working in the front of the co-op apartment building at 499 N. Broadway when he saw smoke billowing from behind the building.
“I ran back there,” said Frank Gjokaj of White Plains. “Fire and smoke, that’s what I saw.”
The White Plains Fire Department arrived around 2:30 p.m. and put out the parking lot fire within 13 minutes. According to Fire Chief Richard Lyman, workers were spreading a tar sealant in the parking lot when a fire started in a tar pot, which is used to melt tar in and is located in the rear parking lot.
