WESTCHESTER, NY — A condensed campaign has come to a close and the voters have made their decision in a special election that has drawn national attention.

Westchester voters have chosen who will fill the unexpired county executive term created when former County Executive George Latimer was elected to Congress.

Kenneth W. Jenkins (D) defeated Christine A. Sculti (R) in the special election and will serve as county executive until the expiration of the current term on Dec. 31, according to the unofficial results.

Gov. Kathy Hochul congratulated Jenkins moments ago, shortly after Sculti called Jenkins to concede.

"I'll fight for New York," Hochul said. "You fight for Westchester County."

Jenkins took the stage to declare victory shortly before 10 p.m.

"Westchester, I am so , so humbled to be here with all of you," Jenkins said. " We know we have more work to do. We know that there is nothing, nothing, that we can't do together."

While Sculti put together an impressive campaign without the benefit of incumbency, there may be an opportunity for a rematch in just a few months time. Another election will be held in November for a full Westchester County Executive term.
