White Plains Certified As Bronze-Level Climate Smart Community

Local governments designated as certified have completed actions that mitigate and adapt to climate change.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — The city of White Plains was officially certified as a bronze-level Climate Smart Community.

Governor Kathy Hochul made the announcement Friday, according to a news release.

Climate Smart Communities is a New York state program that helps local governments take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to a changing climate. The program offers grants, rebates for electric vehicles and free technical assistance.

Local governments that are designated as certified have undergone a rigorous review process to confirm their completion of a suite of concrete actions that mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Mayor Thomas Roach said the city remains committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and is pleased that White Plains was recognized by the state.

“It is clear that we must do our part to preserve our planet and we need to act now,” he said. “Time is not on our side.”

The certification recognizes the many significant climate-smart actions that the While Plains as accomplished.

Some of these actions include establishing one of the most robust community solar projects in the state, ongoing efforts to transition to a clean energy vehicle fleet and implementing a dynamic and wide-reaching community engagement strategy.
