White Plains Train Station Undergoes $95M Renovation

Commuters who work on the run will appreciate the Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity and the USB ports on the benches.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — The $95 million renovation of the third-most used Metro-North Railroad station was unveiled this week.

The downtown White Plains station has been transformed into a state-of-the-art complex that includes a refurbishment of the station's main entrance at the station plaza, the Main Street entrance, the Hamilton Avenue entrance and the Mott Street tunnel.

Gov Kathy Hochul said Monday that upgrading transportation hubs to meet 21st century demands helps fuel the economic comeback the state needs to stay competitive.

A new elevator was installed that is fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Commuters who work while traveling will likely take advantage of Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity and USB chargers on benches.

The waiting room on the island platform was remodeled with expanded space, glass enclosures with new interior station wall panels, wood ceilings and fixtures.

The ticket office, restrooms and concession spaces were also remodeled to fit the station's new feel. Digital screens were added on platforms to provide better access to train information.

Mosaic and laminated glass artwork by Barbara Takenaga, featuring her signature stylized abstract forms, was installed in the station.

White Plains is the third-largest Metro-North station, behind Stamford and Grand Central Terminal. It serves more than 12,000 commuters on a pre-pandemic weekday and is a hub for Harlem Line commuters, providing express and local service. The station also serves as a hub for bus connections, with about 3,000 bus transfers per day in pre-pandemic times.

White Plains Mayor Tom Roach said he has long believed the station was deserving of an upgrade.

"This became even more apparent as the city began the work of redeveloping the area immediately adjacent to the station," he said. "That work continues and will no doubt be enhanced by the investment made by Metro-North."
