Yonkers Housing Authority Announces Housing Voucher Lottery Winners
500 letters notify some of those on the waiting list that they will be receiving Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers to subsidize rents

YONKERS, NY -(November 2, 2023) – Residents who are on a waiting list for affordable housing in Yonkers may hear some good news this week.
The Yonkers Housing Authority (YHA) sent out 500 letters notifying some of those on the waiting list that they will be receiving Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers that can be used to help subsidize rental housing.
The YHA and the City of Yonkers conducted a lottery last summer to add 3,000 people to the waiting list for the vouchers. The vouchers are provided through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and subsidize rental units in market rate buildings for income-qualifying tenants.

“The release of these vouchers further expands housing opportunities for our residents. Yonkers continues to be a leader in Westchester County in providing diversified, quality low-market housing. Thank you to YHA for executing the program so effectively and efficiently,” said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.
Wilson Kimball, President and CEO of the Yonkers Housing Authority, said that it had been more than 10 years since the city had been able to add new people to the list. She stressed that the lottery was for a position on the list, and that the city had to wait for vouchers to be available from the federal government before being able to distribute them. YHA had received more than 14,500 applications for the waiting list.

“We are very excited that we now have some of the vouchers to distribute. We know that there is a dire need for affordable housing, so this is great news. This is also good news for landlords who are participating in the Section 8 program as there will be good, reliable new tenants to fill apartment vacancies.’’
Carlos Laboy, COO of the Yonkers Housing Authority, said that people who received the letters offering vouchers should respond to the housing authority as soon as possible to confirm whether or not they are accepting and to complete information.
He added, “The Yonkers Housing Authority is also always looking for landlords to participate in the Section 8 program. I urge any interested landlords to apply.’’
Landlords interested in the Section 8 program should contact: Sarah Sullo at 914-793-8400 Ext. 127 or e-mail landlordrelations@mhacy.org.
