Early Morning Fire Shreds Four-Story Apartment Building

Two-alarm blaze injures seven, burns for an hour on East 18th Street.

A two-alarm fire scorched a four-story apartment building on East 18th Street near Church Avenue Thursday morning, injuring seven people.

The call for the fire came in around 5:40 a.m., with the flames starting on the first floor tearing through several apartments before the fire department declared it under control roughly an hour later.

More than 100 firefighters and 25 units responded to the incident, with two firefighters sustaining minor injuries.

Five building residents suffered minor injuries, as well. Three refused medical attention, and the rest accompanied the injured service members to Maimonides Medical Center.

The Red Cross has reached out to families currently living in the building, a spokesman said. The building has been vacated and the five families living their will be relocated to emergency housing.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
