Kensington Stables Could Stay A Horse Habitat, Auctioneer Says

Kensington Stables in Windsor Terrace is being auctioned off to cover unpaid debts accrued by the owner's family.

WINDSOR TERRACE, BROOKLYN — Kensington Stables may remain a home for horses, the man in charge of the property's auction told Patch on Tuesday. DNAinfo first reported that the Windsor Terrace institution, which dates from 1930, according to its website, was for sale. Owner Walker Blankinship told the site that he needed to pay off debts accrued by his deceased father. And Marc Yaverbaum, who is auctioning the property, confirmed Tuesday that his services had been retained by Blankinship's mother, Edna.

The deadline for bids had initially been set for Feb. 21, but Yaverbaum said he postponed the auction last Friday, in order to allow the Blankinships to properly discuss a possible proposal from a prospective buyer. Yaverbaum said that any future auction will be announced at least a month in advance.

Yaverbaum also said that multiple prospective bidders are interested in the property, including those looking to redevelop it into a mixed use residential property, a warehouse, and at least one who would maintain it as a stable.

Along those lines, on Tuesday morning when Patch swung by the business, we overheard Blankinship say that he was about to greet bidders who wanted to keep the property as a horse stable. The owner wasn't immediately available for additional comment.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Windsor Terrace Councilman Brad Lander sent a letter to Yaverbaum (embedded below) stating that "the community strongly supports the preservation of a horse stable at this location, and that bidders should be clear about this expectation."

"I would not support a rezoning of this property that did not commit to preservation of a horse stables," Lander wrote. Yaverbaum stressed Tuesday that Lander's letter had no relation to his decision to postpone the auction.
