DAVIDSON, NC — Shoppers can take comfort in knowing the deals they find online Monday are legitimate if they just keep in mind a few safety tips from the Better Business Bureau, that way $4 pajama pants don't turn into a $400 credit card dispute.

1) Watch out for phishing scams. We used to get telemarketer calls, now we get texts too. BBB advises to be really careful about what you click on, even on your phone. If you see an interesting message, log on to the actual website instead of clicking the link or replying. They also say to beware letters, because some scammers are still using old-fashioned tactics and preying on vulnerable people that way.

2) Use your credit card. Credit cards have built in security protection and you can report fraud to your credit card company. It's not the same with debit cards, so a credit card is your best bet. If a seller tells you to use a debit card or a prepaid card, that's a big billowing red flag it's a scam.

3) Price check before you buy. BBB says websites can claim they have the lowest price, but they can be fibbing. Googling the item and comparing it to other stores can save you money and help you avoid being scammed out of your hard-earned dollars.

4) Keep your antivirus software up to date. Not sure if you're in a weird place on the Internet? It happens. If you have antivirus software, keep it updated so ads or websites don't take advantage of you or your personal information.

5) Check website legitimacy. If you think you're in a sketchy place, trust your instincts and do some research. Check out their BBB Business Profile on BBB.org, look at the rating and read customer reviews. Also, look in your address bar and see if the web address says HTTPS. Secure web addresses begin with HTTPS:// and not just HTTP://. Don't put personal or credit card information in forms on non-secure web pages or you're taking a huge risk.
