The
Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) will appoint a new member to serve as a temporary At-Large County Commissioner through December 5, 2022. The Board unanimously approved a request for medical leave from
Commissioner At-Large Ella Scarborough during its Budget Public Policy meeting on Feb. 8, 2022.
North Carolina General Statutes (NCGS) Β§ 128-40 permits the Board of County Commissioners to appoint a temporary replacement for the period of the official’s leave of absence. The Board recommended broad parameters to consider for the replacement and directed staff to recommend an application, screening, and approval process, which was approved during the BOCC Feb. 16, 2022 meeting.

The application period opens on Thursday, Feb. 17, 2022 at 9 a.m. and the deadline is Friday, Feb. 25, 2022
at 5 p.m.

  • Feb. 17–25, 2022
    Application period.
  • March 2, 2022
    Public notified of eligible applicants.
  • March 12, 2022
    County commissioners interview selected applicants.
  • March 15, 2022
    County commissioners vote to appoint candidate.
  • March 22, 2022
    Temporary At-Large County Commissioner sworn in.

To qualify for consideration, applicants are required to:

  • Be a registered Democrat.
  • Be a registered voter.
  • Be 21 years of age or older.
  • Be a resident and qualified to vote in Mecklenburg County.
