New Public Facilities Groundbreaking Set For Feb. 9 In Davidson

DAVIDSON, NC — A groundbreaking ceremony for the Town of Davidson's new public facilities project is set to take plane Tuesday, Feb. 9, the town announced Friday.

Town of Davidson Board of Commissioners will gather for the ceremonial event at the 251 South Street location at 1 p.m.

In 2018, the Town of Davidson advanced a plan to purchase the former school near downtown to be used as new public facilities. A proposal to move town offices to the more expansive former IB school property located at 251 South Street was in the works for more than two years. In September 2018, that plan to purchase the property was put into motion after the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners declined its right of first refusal to buy it from the school district. The move enabled its owner — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools — to proceed with selling the property to the Town of Davidson for $2.46 million.

"The Davidson Board of Commissioners and select members of the Historic Landmarks Commission will be on site to commemorate the occasion with a brief groundbreaking ceremony," the town said. "Due to public health guidance, the town is observing all COVID-19 protocols including holding the brief event outdoors and strictly limiting the number of individuals present to those participating in the ceremony."
