On February 10, 2013 Mauldwin called 911 and claimed to have been involved in a shooting at his home. Mauldwin says he was fired upon by someone and returned fire, striking the other person. According to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office he also advised that he was wearing body armor at the time of the incident.
An investigation determined that the round, which penetrated Mauldwin’s bullet proof vest, was fired by his own .380 handgun. Meanwhile, Mauldwin continued to claim to have been shot by a suspect in the grass line behind his home. An area search failed to locate any shell casings where the alleged shooting occurred.
